The talented athletes of USA Gymnastics (USAG) had a special supporter during the recent U.S. Gymnastics Olympic trials leading up to the Paris Olympics.
Beacon, a four-year-old Golden Retriever, is USAG’s first therapy dog and even received his own credentials for the trials. Hired part-time, Beacon provided comfort to gymnasts and staff. His role was crucial during the trials in Minneapolis, where athletes vied for a spot on Team USA for the Paris Olympics.
Meet Beacon: Team USA Gymnastics’ Four-Legged Comforter
Beacon, affectionately known as the USAG team’s “Goodest Boy,” made a significant impact during the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic trials held from June 27-30. Accompanied by his handler, Tracey Callahan Molnar, who has cared for him since he was a puppy, Beacon provided invaluable support. Originally Callahan Molnar’s service dog, Beacon later became a certified therapy dog through Pet Partners, as reported by ESPN.
Callahan Molnar shared that Beacon’s presence significantly reduces stress and anxiety among the gymnasts. “Science shows petting a dog or even watching someone pet a dog, can lower blood pressure and anxiety, help increase the feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine, and lower cortisol levels,” she explained.
As a former gymnast and coach, Callahan Molnar understands the pressures athletes face and noted how Beacon’s friendly demeanor is always welcomed at events. “Everyone loves to greet him, and he’s just as excited to meet them. It can take 20 minutes to move just a short distance because of all the attention,” she added.
Beacon’s role in providing emotional support and comfort is truly cherished by the USAG team, making him an essential part of their journey to the Paris Olympics.
Beacon: Therapy Dog of Team USA
Beacon, has won the hearts of the team so much that one gymnast even suggested he be promoted to “Chief Happiness Officer” (CHO), according to his handler, Tracey Callahan Molnar, in an interview with NEXSTAR.
The men’s gymnastics team was confirmed at the end of their trials, with Fred Richard and Brody Malone leading the lineup. The women’s team, finalized the following day, includes stars like Simone Biles and Suni Lee.
To mark the end of the trials, Callahan Molnar posted an emotional message on Beacon’s Instagram, accompanied by a montage of pictures and videos from the event, celebrating the joy and comfort Beacon brings to the team.
