Hydrogen is an amazing energy source because it only produces water when burned—no greenhouse gases, no pollution. But here’s the catch: most hydrogen today is made using fossil fuels. This kind of defeats the whole purpose of going green. That’s why finding natural hydrogen in the mountains is such a groundbreaking discovery.

The Science Behind It

So, how is this hydrogen produced? The answer lies in a cool geological process called serpentinisation (sorry, no snakes involved!). When certain minerals deep inside Earth’s mantle react with water, they transform into new minerals and release hydrogen gas in the process. If these rocks are near the surface, they could form massive hydrogen-rich zones.

Mountains Hold the Key

The researchers at the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences ran advanced simulations and found that mountain formations create the perfect conditions for serpentinisation. Mountains could hold 20 times more hydrogen than other geological processes like continental rifting.

The best part? Scientists have already found early signs of natural hydrogen in the Pyrenees, the European Alps, and the Balkans. This means there could be even more undiscovered reserves out there!

Experts believe we’re at a turning point. If these hydrogen reserves are as big as they think, this could spark a whole new industry for clean energy. The next step is figuring out how to safely extract and use it at scale.
