US Museum of Pop Culture Removes References to JK Rowling

JK Rowling

The Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle made the decision to remove all references to author JK Rowling. This decision came after an employee referred to Rowling’s views on gender identity as “hateful”.

As a result of this controversy, all mentions of Rowling have been taken out of the museum’s exhibition called Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic. Additionally, her image has been removed from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

The decision to remove references to JK Rowling appears to have been taken in order to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all museum visitors. It is important to note that this move has generated mixed reactions among the public, with some applauding the museum’s action and others expressing disagreement.

An Inclusive & Welcoming environment

Following a lengthy blog post by a transgender employee in May accusing JK Rowling of promoting “transphobic viewpoints”, the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle has made the decision to remove all references to the Harry Potter author.

In a statement released on Sunday, museum management cited their values of empathy, collaboration, and empowerment, and announced a plan to create more opportunities for underrepresented voices in the arts and culture sector over the next three years.

JK Rowling has faced significant backlash after publicly expressing her views on transgender issues in a series of social media posts on X (formerly twitter) in 2020. As a result, she has been subjected to online abuse.

Museum Reimagines Exhibit Amidst Rowling Controversy

The museum’s recent blog post explained that due to what they described as “super hateful and divisive views” expressed by JK Rowling, they have made the decision to remove any mention of the author from the artefacts on display. Instead, the museum’s focus will shift towards highlighting the contributions and craftsmanship of the actors, prop makers, and costume designers.

“For the time being, the curators decided to remove any of her artefacts from this gallery to reduce her impact. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s what we were able to do in the short-term while determining long-term practices,” they wrote.

By redirecting the narrative to the collaborative efforts behind the scenes, the museum aims to celebrate the artistic talents and dedication of the entire creative team involved in the making of the beloved franchise. This shift in approach reflects a commitment to promoting a more inclusive and positive environment for visitors while recognizing the broader impact of art and its various contributors.
