In recent years, social media has become a breeding ground for various trends, some of which can be harmful. One such detrimental trend is “Thinspo,” short for “thinspiration,” which promotes extreme thinness and unhealthy weight loss practices under the guise of motivation or inspiration.
What is “Thinspo”?
Thinspo content typically consists of images, quotes, and stories that glorify extreme thinness. It encourages restrictive dieting, excessive exercise, and sometimes even dangerous behaviors like starvation. Often featuring photos of very slim individuals, Thinspo includes motivational messages that push others to pursue similar body types.
Why is Thinspo harmful?
Unrealistic body standards: Thinspo encourages an unrealistic and unattainable image of how the body should be and as such makes people go to great lengths in making drastic and unhealthy changes just to fit that mold.
Encouragement of unhealthy behaviors: This trend criminalises and promotes reckless behaviours, such as anorexia and bulemia eating disorders, leading to making them appear fashionable.
Negative impact on mental health: Effects linked to the consumption of Thinspo content are that self-esteem and body image are negatively affected leading to feelings of inadequacies, depression, and anxiety.
Distortion of health: Thinspo deceives its audience into linking thinness with health which is not the fact.
How to fight against the trend
Promote body positivity: Accept all sizes, and promote health for the plus-sized instead of promoting stereotypical thin and beautiful women or men.
Educate on healthy practices: Suggest ways on healthy eating and physical activities, as well as proper ways of managing stress, explaining the rationale for comprehensive health.
Report harmful content: If by any chance you come across any Thinspo content feel free to report it on the various platforms to try and reduce the extent of its spread.
Seek support: In the case of body image problems or eating disorders, following advice of specialist, including therapists and nutritionists, may be most helpful.
Due to the effects of Thinspo and influencing potential, we can try to avoid or refute the potentially negative messages and support only positive ones.
