Survey Says: AI is a Burnout Machine for Today’s Workers

Artificial intelligence making more work

Hey there! So, you know how everyone’s hyping AI? Turns out, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. A new survey says AI might be making our work lives harder, not easier. Let’s dive in!

The AI Paradox

Artificial intelligence was supposed to save us time, right? Well, according to a survey by Upwork, 77% of workers feel that AI is increasing their workload. That’s a huge chunk! Imagine thinking AI would handle the grunt work, only to end up with even more tasks.

Executives vs. Employees: A Disconnect

Executives are super optimistic about AI. About 96% of them think it’s going to boost productivity. But workers? Not so much. The survey found that nearly half of the employees using AI are clueless about how to achieve these supposed productivity gains. Instead, they’re stuck doing extra work.

The AI Struggle is Real

Why is this happening? Well, 39% of employees say they spend extra time checking AI’s work because it’s not always accurate. You’ve probably heard about chatbots “hallucinating” and making stuff up. Plus, 21% of workers are spending additional time learning how to use these tools.

Burnout is Rising

All this extra work is taking a toll. About 40% of employees feel overwhelmed by their company’s demands related to AI. This stress is leading to burnout. Upwork’s survey found that 71% of full-time employees are burned out, and 65% are struggling with their employer’s productivity expectations. Alarmingly, 1 in 3 workers might quit in the next six months due to burnout.

A Double-Edged Sword

AI is a bit like email. It’s supposed to help, but sometimes it just adds more to our plates. Introducing new tech into old work systems isn’t cutting it. Kelly Monahan from Upwork’s research institute says we need to rethink how we organize work to truly benefit from AI.

The Other Side

Of course, not everyone agrees with this bleak view. Microsoft’s study found that 90% of workers think AI saves time. So, the debate continues.

In the end, AI’s impact on work is a mixed bag. What’s clear is that we need to find a balance to ensure it truly helps us and doesn’t just pile on more work. Stay tuned as we navigate this AI adventure!
