The leading car manufacturers of India had a varied performance in January 2025, with Maruti Suzuki and Mahindra & Mahindra enjoying growth while Hyundai and Tata Motors observed declines.
What the numbers say!
The highest-selling car manufacturer in terms of dispatches turned out to be Maruti Suzuki. The dispatches rose to 2,12,251 units with a year-on-year increase in overall dispatches of 6% in January. Domestic passenger vehicle sales increased by 4.07% to 1,73,599. Besides, exports also rose from 23,921 to 27,100 units compared to the last year. However, in January 2025, Hyundai Motor India declined 3%, with a total dispatch of 65,603 vehicles as opposed to 67,615 units last January. Domestic sales narrowed from 57,115 to 54,003 units, while exports picked up slightly from 10,500 to 11,600 vehicles.
Tata Motors suffered a steeper decline, with total dispatches slipping 7% to 80,304 units against 86,125 units in January 2024. Domestic sales also dropped by 7% to 78,159 units as commercial vehicles fell marginally to 31,988. Passenger vehicle sales decreased by 11% to 48,316 units from 54,033 in the last year. Considering that commercial vehicles is among the more prominent products, Tata motors seemed to have experienced a more harsher January than the rest of it’s competitors. On the other side, M&M exhibited great improvement, with total sales rising 16% to 85,432 units. Passenger vehicle sales soared 18% to 50,659 units from 43,068 previously, while domestic commercial vehicle sales were pegged at 23,917 units.
It’s a mixed bag!
With mixed performances among major automakers, Maruti Suzuki and M&M maintained a positive trend, while Hyundai and Tata Motors have experienced difficulties with the changing automotive landscape. With a slew of new launches planned in this quarter, car manufacturers seemed excited about the new phase, which includes Electric vehicles, given the latest push by central government, especially with regards to the Lithium Ion batteries, which is the most important constituent of an EV.
