Indian rapper Hanumankind, born Sooraj Cherukat, has quickly risen to fame in India’s growing hip-hop scene, thanks to his latest hit single, “Big Dawgs.” The track has topped global charts, at one point even surpassing Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.” With over 132 million Spotify streams and 83 million YouTube views, Hanumankind has captured international attention.

It’s a smashing hit!

The music video for “Big Dawgs” features the 31-year-old rapper performing inside a “maut ka kuan” or “well of death,” where motorcyclists perform stunts around him. This visual spectacle, directed by Bijoy Shetty, highlights Hanumankind’s vibrant energy, while the track itself, produced by Kalmi Reddy, showcases his distinctive style.

Influences and style

Hanumankind’s music blends global hip-hop influences with local Indian elements. Born in Kerala, he spent his childhood in various countries due to his father’s work, living in places like France, Nigeria, Egypt, and Dubai. His time in Houston, Texas, however, was particularly impactful, as it introduced him to the local hip-hop scene. Influenced by Texas legends like DJ Screw and UGK, Hanumankind incorporates these styles into his music while maintaining a connection to his Indian heritage.

Returning to India in 2021, Cherukat left behind corporate life, including a stint at Goldman Sachs, to pursue music full-time. His lyrics often explore the struggles of street life in southern India, fusing modern rhythms with traditional instruments like the tabla. In “Big Dawgs,” he shifts away from luxury themes, instead highlighting small-town stuntmen, whom he calls the real “big dogs.”

Praise and criticism

While his music has garnered significant praise, some critics argue that his English lyrics and Western influences might not fully resonate with Indian audiences. However, Hanumankind’s global appeal and refusal to conform to expectations have earned him a loyal fanbase, making him a unique voice in the world of hip-hop.
