The information sector, which saw growth during the Covid-19 pandemic, has lost about 2.5 percent of its jobs in the past year. This trend has led to more individuals staying in their current jobs for longer periods, limiting opportunities for career advancement. While there is still demand for tech workers in sectors like government and healthcare, the salaries in these fields are often lower.

Big Tech companies, including Meta, Google, and Amazon, have implemented significant job cuts and hiring freezes. Meta, for example, recently rehired a fraction of the people it laid off but later conducted further layoffs, reflecting the consequences of rapid, unsustainable growth.

Anxiety & Competition

This prolonged downturn has created anxiety and increased competition among job seekers. A telling example of this desperation was witnessed at the Grace Hopper Celebration, an annual conference and career fair for female and nonbinary tech workers. Attendees faced long lines and heightened urgency as they sought job opportunities in a competitive market.

The pressure is also evident among individuals trying to transition into tech from other industries. Job seekers like Nia McSwain, who is transitioning from hospitality to tech, face the challenge of sending out numerous job applications daily to break into the industry. Similarly, Philip John Basile, a full-stack engineer, has intensified his job search, attending multiple interviews daily and focusing on networking.

Foreign workers in the US, affected by layoffs, are scrambling for sponsorship to remain in the country. However, data shows that many have been successful in finding new jobs after being laid off. The supply of tech workers remains high, with a surge in H-1B visa applications, indicating that foreign workers are eager to secure tech jobs in the US. However, the annual issuance cap of 85,000 H-1B visas poses a significant constraint.

More hurdles

Younger job seekers are encountering additional hurdles, with fewer entry-level positions and a focus on experienced employees. This shift has led to a median salary increase in tech job postings in the US. Job seekers are also turning to AI technology, like ChatGPT, to assist with resume and cover letter writing, enabling them to apply to more jobs efficiently. However, this has led to a higher volume of applications for recruiters to sift through.

Overall, job hunting has become a full-time endeavor, with individuals dedicating significant time to applications, networking, and even leveraging social media platforms like TikTok to document their job search journeys. While the job market is challenging, the increased transparency about layoffs and a more connected community of job seekers have emerged as positive aspects of this shifting landscape.
