A recent survey conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by the luxury dating site Seeking.com sheds light on the growing trend of “hypergamy” in the US dating scene.
What is hypergamy?
Hypergamy refers to the practice of seeking partners of higher socioeconomic status to enhance one’s quality of life. While initially unfamiliar to 43% of the 2,000 surveyed adults, 47% held a positive view of the concept once it was explained. Nearly 39% believe that a partner exhibiting hypergamic traits can significantly contribute to their personal growth and discovery.
The numbers are quite interesting
The survey underscores the evolving priorities in modern dating, where emotional connections are now deemed essential alongside traditional desires for exclusive experiences and being swept off one’s feet. Nearly half (47%) of respondents consider a date luxurious if it involves meaningful conversations and learning about a partner’s background, highlighting a shift towards valuing deeper connections over superficial attractions.
Interestingly, 39% of participants equate luxury with having their date pay for the evening in full. The sentiment of being swept off their feet remains significant, with 65% considering it crucial and 35% believing a relationship is doomed if this feeling isn’t achieved on the first date. Self-confidence (80%), pride in accomplishments (75%), and going “above and beyond” (73%) are also key traits that people find attractive.
Moreover, the survey reveals that 45% of Americans are comfortable showcasing their success and affluence on a first date, with 31% considering financial success a major factor in their attractiveness. Traits linked to a higher standard of living, such as financial stability and cooking skills, are highly valued by over 42% of respondents. Other appealing qualities include having a nice home (24%), a cultured taste in music (21%), and good fashion sense (20%).
This research highlights a nuanced approach to modern dating where luxury and emotional depth go hand in hand, redefining what it means to connect and attract in today’s society.
