For us, the Millennials and Gen Z, it’s career over job satisfaction

Gen Z career over enjoyment

Entering the workforce as a Gen Zer isn’t just about finding a job—it’s about navigating a landscape shaped by economic crises and evolving priorities. The ADP People at Work report highlights how my generation approaches work differently than our predecessors.

Our priorities

Unlike baby boomers who prioritize job satisfaction and flexibility, my peers and I lean towards financial security and career progression. We’ve witnessed economic instability from the financial crisis to pandemic-induced uncertainties, shaping our focus on stability over daily job enjoyment. For older millennials, the aftermath of the financial crisis meant fewer job options, pushing them to prioritize pay and long-term security. Younger millennials and Gen Z face their own challenges, balancing high inflation and competitive job markets that limit traditional markers of success.

Despite these hurdles, we’re not devoid of ambition. Many of us are willing to commit to intense work hours if it means securing our financial futures. The idea of a midlife crisis, once defined by lavish spending, has shifted for us into a quest for meaning and engagement in our careers. Interestingly, while older millennials are willing to sacrifice happiness for career advancement, younger Gen Z workers aren’t far behind. We’re less concerned with flexible work hours compared to older generations, instead valuing clear career paths and opportunities for growth.

Our challenges

Remote work, which surged during the pandemic, brings its own challenges. Many of us appreciate the autonomy it offers but feel heightened scrutiny from employers, impacting our job security perceptions. It’s crucial for companies to establish transparent policies to build trust with remote workers.

In essence, my generation seeks a balance between financial stability and personal fulfillment in our careers. As we navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, we’re redefining success on our terms, prioritizing growth and purpose over traditional perks of employment. It’s not just about satisfaction, it’s also about the material benefits.
