The decision to sleep separately is often driven by a desire for better sleep quality, as poor sleep can negatively impact mood and contribute to conflicts in relationships.

Dr. Seema Khosla, a pulmonologist and spokesperson for the AASM, highlights the importance of a good night’s sleep for overall health and happiness. Couples opting for separate sleeping arrangements recognize the significance of quality sleep in enhancing their well-being.

The Natural Craving for Connection

The University of Michigan study, conducted with mice as subjects, revealed interesting behaviors. The mice, seeking physical connection and a sense of safety, often sacrificed their preferred sleep locations to be close to one another. This behavior, termed “somatolonging,” suggests a natural desire for physical contact and connection. The study authors noted parallels between these findings and the experiences of people during the COVID-19 pandemic, where somatolonging became evident due to reduced physical contact.

Contrary to the belief that snuggling enhances sleep, the study implies that, for the sleep-deprived, it may not be as beneficial as previously thought. The research provides scientific support for the idea that couples choosing to sleep apart may be making a sensible decision for their overall health and happiness.
