NASA restores contact with Voyager 2 spacecraft after weeks of silence

NASA’s Voyager 2 spacecraft, a legendary explorer of the outer reaches of our solar system since its launch in 1977, has once again established contact with Earth after a temporary hiatus.

Despite being billions of kilometers away and venturing into the depths of interstellar space, Voyager 2 had experienced a communication pause triggered by an unfortunate incident. Its antenna had inadvertently veered off course due to an incorrect command, interrupting the flow of data back to Earth.

However, thanks to the swift efforts of the dedicated NASA team, the spacecraft’s communication has been restored. This marks another milestone in the extraordinary mission of Voyager 2, which has continuously provided us with invaluable insights about the farthest corners of our cosmic neighborhood.

Initiating the corrective action, the DSN facility based in Canberra, Australia, transmitted a precise command to Voyager 2, directing it to realign its antenna towards Earth once again.

A substantial time delay was inevitable due to the distance separating the spacecraft and our planet. After traveling through space for over 18 hours, the command finally reached Voyager 2, and an additional 18 hours elapsed before its response reached back to Earth.

Voyager 1: The Farthest Spacecraft in Communication

Surpassing all other spacecraft in its distance from Earth, Voyager 1 currently resides a staggering 15 billion kilometers away, and its contact remains unbroken. However, Voyager 2, which experienced a recent two-week communication outage, holds the record for the longest period NASA had gone without hearing from it.

Incredible as it may seem, both Voyager spacecraft, despite their age, continue to operate seamlessly, fueled by their plutonium cores. As long as this power source endures, there is every chance that these intrepid explorers will continue their mission until the remarkable 50th anniversary of their launch in 2027.
