Following the successful $230 million global launch of “Despicable Me 4” during the July 4 holiday, Universal and Illumination have revealed that “Minions 3” will be the upcoming addition to the popular animated series.
Minions Set for Another Cinematic Adventure in 2027
The lovable, trouble-making Minions are set to take the big screen by storm once again on June 30, 2027. This latest movie is penned by the talented Brian Lynch, known for his work on “Minions” and the “The Secret Life of Pets” series, and will be directed by Pierre Coffin, who has been nominated for an Academy Award and directed the first three “Despicable Me” movies as well as the inaugural “Minions” film. Pierre Coffin isn’t just behind the camera; he’s been the voice behind the Minions since they first graced the silver screen in 2010 with “Despicable Me.”
At the production helm will be Chris Meledandri, the founder and CEO of Illumination, alongside producer Janet Healy. Together, they’ve been instrumental in bringing the Minions to life over the years, and this film is no exception.
The “Despicable Me” and “Minions” Franchise
Since making its debut in 2010, the cinematic world of “Despicable Me” and its spin-off “Minions” films have soared to record heights, becoming the most successful animated franchise globally with total earnings approaching $5 billion. The release of “Minions: The Rise of Gru” in 2022 took the box office by storm, becoming the top-grossing movie of its opening weekend and breaking the July 4 holiday records with a domestic take of $125 million. “Despicable Me 4” wasn’t far behind, launching with a domestic opening of $122.6 million, and it’s poised to continue its dominance with forecasted earnings of over $30 million in its second weekend.
Variety’s leading film critic, Peter Debruge, noted the shifting dynamics of the summer box office landscape, stating that what was once a stronghold for big-name actors and franchises has now become the playground of the “Despicable Me” series, underscoring the franchise’s enduring appeal and dominance.
