Content creator Morgan Pate explained to Elle that “when you say you want someone to ‘match your freak,’ you’re wanting someone to go day by day with you and do the things that you love doing, but together.” While it may sound risqué, the expression’s everyday use is more wholesome. Examples include sharing daily routines, like enjoying coffee, working out, tanning, or binge-watching shows in cozy pajamas.
How did it start?
The term gained traction from Tinashe’s viral song “Nasty,” released in April. The line “Is somebody gonna match my freak?” resonated widely, inspiring social media trends and playful videos. Linguistics expert Kelly Elizabeth Wright from the University of Wisconsin-Madison noted that the concept of “freak” cycles through pop culture roughly every decade. She cited Rick James’ iconic 1981 hit “Super Freak” as an earlier example.
Wright highlighted that these cultural moments encourage both self-acceptance and celebration of individuality. She emphasized that “freak matching” embodies empowerment, particularly for sexually uninhibited women. It reflects the idea that being open about one’s quirks and finding a like-minded partner is desirable and even profitable in today’s society.
As dating language evolves, “freak matching” is now entering common vernacular.
