Imagine attention as having different gears. You’ve got your “laser focus” mode, where you’re crushing tasks and feeling unstoppable. This is awesome, but it drains your mental battery fast.  Then there’s “auto-pilot” mode, like filing taxes or cleaning your room. It keeps you busy without blowing your mind, but guess what? These tasks can help you recharge for the big stuff.

Listen to your body! Whether that’s first thing in the morning or late at night, schedule difficult tasks for when you’re most alert. Feeling fried? Don’t beat yourself up. Take a break and do some mindless chores.  Even small changes can help. Try the Pomodoro Technique: work in focused 20-minute bursts with short breaks in between. Bonus points for natural light, background music, and ditching the PJs – getting dressed for work can trick your brain into focus mode.

The holy grail – that state of laser focus and creativity. Here are some tips:

  • Get specific: Vague goals like “do better” are useless. Set clear, achievable milestones.
  • Block out distractions: Silence notifications and find a quiet space.
  • Brainstorm with a buddy: Talking things through can spark new ideas.
