Air New Zealand to weigh passengers before boarding flights

Air New Zealand

Summer travel season has kicked off in New Zealand, and Air New Zealand is taking a unique approach to ensure safe and comfortable flights for all passengers. Over 10,000 vacationers will commence their summer getaways by participating in a weigh-in; Air New Zealand to weight passengers!

Attention International Passengers!

Air New Zealand has announced plans to implement a weighing system for passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport, starting on July 2. The airline is conducting a survey to measure the average weight of travellers. And also their luggage on international flights departing from Auckland International Airport. That’s right – passengers will be jumping on the scales!

“We weigh everything that goes on the aircraft – from the cargo to the meals on board, to the luggage in the hold,” said Alastair James, load control improvement specialist for Air New Zealand. “For customers, crew and cabin bags, we use average weights, which we get from doing this survey.”

Anonymized Approach to Weighing

To ensure the protection of passenger’s privacy, Air New Zealand acknowledges that weight is a personal matter that not everyone may feel comfortable disclosing. Therefore, the airline has implemented measures to maintain anonymity of the data collected.

“We know stepping on the scales can be daunting. We want to reassure our customers there is no visible display anywhere. No one can see your weight, not even us,” James said.

As part of the survey process, travellers will be requested to step onto a digital scale during the check-in procedure. However, it is important to note that the information regarding their weight will not be visible on the agent’s screen. Similarly, the weight of their baggage will be recorded separately on a different scale. Both sets of data are then submitted to the survey anonymously, with no identifying information attached.

Survey is voluntary!

Air New Zealand emphasises that participation in the survey is entirely voluntary and discreet. Understanding that the act of stepping on scales can be intimidating for some. Mr. James assures customers that there is no visible display of weight anywhere, including to the airline staff.
