A curious new trend is gaining altitude in the world of travel — and it’s called Naked Flying. Don’t be alarmed, it’s not about being naked in the air. Rather, it refers to a minimalist style of travel – a stripped-down travel experience where passengers fly with the bare essentials in terms of luggage, services, and distractions.
This movement arises from the desire to travel lighter, faster and more sustainably among travellers – especially the younger generations. As airlines continue to charge for everything from checked bags to preferred seats, and with more focus on climate change, Naked Flying is an economical, eco-friendly option to fly.
There are three main styles within this trend:
- Luggage-Free Travel: Travellers bring nothing but the essentials — often just a phone, wallet, and passport. Travel clothes are either rented or purchased at the destination, this is very common especially among digital nomads and adventure travellers who really value freedom and spontaneity.
- No-Frills Flying: This form of Naked Flying involves flying with ultra-low cost carriers. Backpackers, students or those simply travelling on a budget avoid add-ons such as food, seat upgrades, or even overhead bag restrictions and just go with the cheapest fare possible.
- Digital Detox Flyers: Digital Detox Flyers purposely avoid screens, in-flight entertainment systems, or Wi-Fi. They like to take the flying time to disconnect, self-reflect, or meditate. This does not as to lifestyle is also being adopted by many self-care or wellness-oriented individuals aswell as busy professionals looking for stillness in transit.
Where does this occur?
Naked Flying is predominately occurring in Europe and Southeast Asia where short-haul flights on budget airlines are a common mode of travel to facilitate travel from one destination to the next. It is not uncommon for traveller types to book a flight from Berlin to Barcelona or Bangkok, or from Berlin to Bali, and in fact airports in those regions offer luggage storage or rental clothing options for these leaner flyers.
Overall Naked Flying denotes a growing departure from our perception of luxury and comfort at cruising altitude. Who could have imagined that at a time where flights are invariably overbooked and we are charged to carry onboard excess baggage, we would see a freedom in flying these days that operates on less, in order to gain more.
