Every year in March, the American Kennel Club (AKC) puts out an annual report on the most popular dog breeds in America. This year as well, on March 20, the AKC released its list of the most popular dog breeds for 2024. The report discusses the most popular breeds in 2024 as well as breeds that had marked growth in popularity of ownership. Many of the breeds have become famous because of their famous owners, like , like Lady Gaga and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
The French Bulldog manitains it’s numero uno position for the third consecutive year. It took over the top position in 2022 from the Labrador Retriever, which had a remarkable run of thirty-one years. Of late, the French Bulldog has gained rapid popularity due to its size and adaptability to cohabitating with individuals and families in many different living conditions. In 2012, French Bulldogs were ranked #14, and its ranking has continued to improve over the last several years.
At number two, the Labrador Retriever continues to be popular breed despite losing it’s #1 standing in 2022. Labradors are known for their adaptability, intelligence, and characteristics that make it a suitable first dog. Their roles as service dogs, hunting dogs as well as family companions keep this breed in American households.
Third in the list is Golden Retriever. Golden Retrievers frequently are placed in the top five, and 2024 was no different. People tend to love them because of their friendly nature, smart behaviour and playfulness. And many owners will say they have multiple Goldens at home, which only solidifies Goldens as one of the most popular breeds.
At number four, German Shepherd are consistently switching spots with Goldens, but they are still one of the most popular breeds. They are obedient, intelligent and loyal. This makes them well suited for police and search-and-rescue work. Besides, German Shepherds regularly engage in a vast amount of activities.
Fifth in the list is the Poodle. Poodles have moved up and down from being in the top five over the years, but they still hold a prominent position. The hypoallergenic variety are a great option for those with allergies, not to mention they come in a few sizes to fit anybody’s lifestyle. Poodles are still incredibly well-known, especially since they are the breed that started the designer-breeds movement with the Labradoodle.
Breeds that saw the most growth in popularity
The AKC’s annual list also includes notable breeds that have increased in popularity. In 2024, there were several unexpected breeds that went up significantly:
- Kerry Blue Terrier – Climbed 25 spots, moving from #160 to #135.
- Bracco Italiano – A newer breed recognized in 2022, it jumped 20 places from #152 to #132.
- German Pinscher & American Staffordshire Terrier – Both gained 18 spots.
The higher position in the rankings of these breeds indicates changing interests of dog owners. The AKC’s list provides insights into the continued popularity of certain breeds while also highlighting changes in trends. While the breed rankings may go up and down, one thing that is of foremost important for the dog, whichever breed it may be, is the nutrition that it’s food has to provide. Megabowl is among the best when it comes to nutritious food for pets, ensuring the right amount of high quality protein, healthy fats and essential vitamins and minerals.
